The Takoma Park Police Department is in the final days of its annual book bag and school supplies donation drive the department has been promoting on social media.
The department began the drive on July 19, and the last day for donations is this Friday, Aug. 19.
The police are asking residents to buy a book bag and stock it with school supplies, and then drop the donations at headquarters at 7500 Maple Ave.
The sought-after supplies run from the basics such as pens, pencils, paper, and binders to book covers, crayons, construction paper, calculators, glue sticks, lunch boxes, and more for children attending city schools.
So far, the department has collected about 10 book bags, some stocked with supplies and some not, according to Cathy Plevy, the department’s public information officer.
“Unfortunately, we have not done as well this year, but I also know times are very tough for people right now,” Plevy wrote in an email. “So, we are grateful for anything we have received so far.”
The department also accepts supplies whether they’re part of a book bag donation or not.
