Takoma Park has updated the city’s Data Explorer to reflect information from the Census American Community Survey data for 2016-2020, officials announced.
The site offers visualizations of selected data, “including the city’s demographics, racial and economic inequalities, and access to broadband internet among residents. All visualizations are interactive, letting interested residents go further in exploring Census data.
“The Data Explorer webpage also compares results for Takoma Park to Montgomery County and Maryland, identifying statistically significant differences in results for the City compared to the state and county,” according to the introductory web page.
Some of the highlights from the summary include:
- Takoma Park is a diverse city with a population of 17,703
- A little more than half of the city’s residents are homeowners, but there are substantial economic and racial disparities tied to homeownership
- Economic opportunity in Takoma Park is also stratified by race, and
- Access to education, broadband internet, and health insurance varies by race and age.
Instructions for using the Data Explorer, including how to navigate subject tabs and sub-tabs, or looking at the methodology, among other information, is available online. The city also intends to post an instructional video.
