The Takoma Park Police Department is accepting applications for the next Community Police Academy, the department announced.
The academy is a once-a-week, 12-week series of classes that will cover topics including patrol, traffic enforcement, use of force, criminal investigations and more taught by officers, detectives and civilians in the department.
The courses also will include equipment demonstrations, practical scenarios, field trips and ride-along opportunities will police officers.
“The Takoma Park Police Department believes that educating the community will result in gaining their understanding and support,” the advisory reads. “Through implementation of the Community Police Academy, the community will gain new insight into how law enforcement officers perform their duties.”
The academy is free to the public. Seats are limited to the first 25 students and will be filled based on a first come/first serve basis. Applicants must be 16 years of age or older, live or work in Takoma Park and not have any serious misdemeanor or felony offenses.
The Community Police Academy will begin on Tuesday, March 7 and classes will run each Tuesday from 7–9:30 p.m.
