Takoma Park Man Arrested for Possession of Child Pornography

A Takoma Park man who was previously arrested for vandalizing public libraries in Greenbelt and New Carrollton has been arrested on child pornography charges, according to reports.

WUSA9 reports that Charles Sutherland faces at least seven charges of possessing child pornography.

Last June, Sutherland was arrested on vandalism and hate crime charges for spray painting the word “groomer” on the front doors of the Greenbelt and New Carrolton libraries during Capital Pride Week. At the time, Sutherland was employed as a school librarian at Northview Elementary School in Bowie and has been on administrative leave from the school since his arrest, according to WUSA9.

Sutherland admitted to the vandalism and allowed a search of his home at the time, according to charging documents.

According to the documents, officers found numerous diapers, children’s dolls, and a child-sized doll in Sutherland’s bed. In the documents, Sutherland stated that he had no children, nieces, or nephews. Furthermore, he admitted that he had child pornography on his laptop at home.

The forensic examination of Sutherland’s laptop, which began after his computer was seized following his arrest in June, was completed in January, with seven child pornographic files found.

Sutherland’s hate crime case is ongoing, according to BuzzFeed News. Sutherland will appear in court in April for the charges related to child sex abuse materials and in August for the charges related to hate crimes.
