Montgomery County Police have arrested and charged 34-year-old Efrain Diaz Romero of Silver Spring in connection with a fatal hit-and-run that killed 42-year-old Candido Noe Rojas Rojas of Takoma Park last June.
At around 1:17 a.m. on June 3, officers from the Takoma Park Police and Montgomery County Fire & Rescue Service responded to a report of a man found lying in the road with head injuries in the 1100 block of University Blvd. East, near the Mega Mart Latino Supermarket. The victim, Rojas Rojas, was found in the eastbound lanes of University Blvd. East and was taken to a nearby hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
Detectives determined that a vehicle traveling westbound collided with Rojas Rojas, then fled the scene on Lebanon Street and entered Prince George’s County. The autopsy conducted by the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner in Washington, D.C., determined that the injuries were likely the result of a vehicle.
Police stated last month that, after reviewing video evidence, detectives obtained a clearer description of the suspect’s vehicle, believed to be a dark-colored, possibly black, 2014-2017 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 with minor damage on its left side. Detectives later found the Chevrolet and identified Diaz Romero as the suspect who used the truck to kill Rojas Rojas.
According to an MCPD press release issued Friday, Diaz Romero has been charged with failure to immediately return to the scene of an accident involving death, as well as several other traffic-related offenses.
He is currently being held without bond.
