San Alejo, a “modern Salvadoran kitchen” in Hyattsville that originally opened in 2016, is expanding to Takoma Park.
According to The MoCo Show, the restaurant will open its second location at 7643 New Hampshire Ave. in the Takoma/Langley Crossroads neighborhood, replacing No. 1 China.
Washington Post food critic Tim Carman named San Alejo the best Salvadoran restaurant in the D.C. area in his 2019 review, describing it as an exceptional eatery located in an unassuming strip center in suburban Maryland.
“The entrees are pure, bone-deep comforts, starting with the parillada San Alejo, a sizzling fajitas-style platter of grilled meats, shrimp and a mild, finely ground Salvadoran-style chorizo sausage,” Carman wrote. “I wish I could tell you the secret to the marinade, but whatever the kitchen uses to tenderize and flavor its beef loin and skirt steak, it leads to the finest versions of lomo saltado and carne asada that I’ve sampled in recent memory. Even the salmon fillet, grilled well past the pink, moist center that I prefer, was saved by the accompanying aioli, this piquant and smoky zigzag of sauce.”
The restaurant’s opening timeline has not been announced. The Source will update as more information becomes available.
