Takoma Park Police are warning residents about the TikTok “door-kicking challenge,” which encourages people to kick in the doors of homes and businesses to gain social media attention.
According to police spokesperson Cathy Plevy, at least two incidents involving the challenge have occurred in Takoma Park over the past week.
“This is a misdemeanor crime under Maryland Statute §6-301 and commonly referred to as Malicious Destruction of Property,” Plevy said. “The penalty depends on the extent and value of the damage and ranges from 60 days in jail and a fine up to $500 to three years in jail and a fine up to $2,500.”
Police encourage residents to secure their doors and windows, watch for suspicious activity, and talk to their children about the dangers of participating in social media challenges.
“If you witness any incidents related to this challenge or have any information, we encourage you to contact local law enforcement immediately,” Plevy said.
